For grown-ups
Why a coloring book is a surprisingly good first code editor.
Screen-free by design
Kids meet syntax with a crayon in hand, building confidence before they ever meet an error message.
Builds real vocabulary
Selector, property, value, class, id — the words are introduced once and reused across the whole series.
Creativity first
Every page ends with a free-choice panel where children invent their own rules and color scheme.
Questions we get a lot
- What ages is it for?
- Ages 6–11. Younger children can color happily with a grown-up reading the rules aloud; older children usually start writing their own rules by the end of a book.
- Do we need a computer?
- No. Everything works with the book and crayons. If you do have a computer, each book ends with the same drawing written as real HTML and CSS to type out.
- Is the code real?
- Yes — every rule in every book is valid CSS. We simplify the scope, never the syntax, so nothing has to be unlearned later.
- How does it work in a classroom?
- One page is roughly a 20-minute activity. Ten pages make a half-term unit, and the shared vocabulary (selector, property, value) carries across every edition.
